Weedeater: God luck and good speed

20/05/08  ||  Kampfar

The headman of Weedeater, and perhaps the band itself, should be known to most sludge fans already. So, a waste of time this shit piece. Anyway, Dave “Dixie” Collins has been active for decades, most noticeably so in Buzzov*en and Bongzilla, the latter a band I pretty much love, the former I have only downloaded but never listened to. I sure will investigate, but now it is time for “God luck and good speed”.

I wouldn’t advise you to take up drugs for the sole purpose of getting the most of this album, or sludge in general for that matter, but it remains a fact that some heavy smoking will set you in a proper mood for this shit. Drugs or not, “GLAGS” is not an album to put on when you feel like jogging Everest, in fact it would be much better suited as the soundtrack for a dive into the Mariana trench.

Geography aside, this lot is not about churning out low frequencies for the sake of it, rather trying, and pretty much succeeding in being the heaviest fucking band on (BBC’s) Planet Earth. All while writing actually songs. This heaviest-band-on-earth bullshit was clichéd even before I had taken my first wank, so I do forgive if you just happened to do a roll-eyes, but even you can’t deny, after listening to “GLAGS”, that them here bongs have a proper buzz, a buzz of their own, warm and textured at it.

(This delightful distortion is a symbiosis of guitar and bass. I love distorted as fuck bass, and also “Dixie”)

The only tune, apart from the insignificant outro, not sporting this wall of delightful noise is “Alone”, a THC infused country ballad if there ever was one. I love it. In fact, the only thing I don’t dig about “GLAGS” is that some of the slower parts end up sounding likewise. Then again, every song has a payoff, not one of them fucking off into jam nothingness. And, “Dixie” has fucking ace rasp, sick at it.

I recommend.

8,5 out of 10.
